What was announced

On 15 October 2026, Anthropic described expanded access for a METR evaluation team, including terms for information access and publication. A clarification followed on 16 October. This is an access announcement, not a completed universal safety certification. This Aivan analysis was prepared on 20 October.

An editorial reading guide

Ask which model version was assessed, which components evaluators could inspect and which scenarios were excluded. A limited scope can still provide useful evidence, but its conclusion must remain bounded. General model assessment cannot prove that a particular finance-system connector correctly enforces permissions.

Turn reports into deployment evidence

Record report date, model version, method, limitations and findings relevant to the workflow. Link procurement claims to this evidence and keep gaps explicit. Add internal controlled tests for forbidden access, missing sources and unapproved actions. Repeat them when models or tools change. External evaluation complements rather than replaces deployment-specific acceptance.

Distinguish access announcements from findings

Track whether evidence is an access announcement, a published assessment or a finding reviewed for your workflow. This announcement alone does not establish completed tests or enterprise acceptance. Ask procurement claims to identify the exact report and supported conclusion rather than compressing evaluator involvement into a broad approval label.

Read scope before applying a conclusion

Identify the tested version and date, the capability or risk, evaluator access, method, uncertainty and the decision the result informs. Limited evidence can still be useful when interpreted within its scope. A technical-capability study cannot directly establish folder permissions, HR-policy accuracy or payment-connector behavior. Record covered risks and remaining gaps separately.

Complement reports with deployment-specific tests

Use a synthetic payment-draft tool that cannot move funds. Define authorized and unauthorized roles, out-of-limit amounts, missing evidence and required approvals before running tests. Repeat the same cases after model or tool changes, preserving traceable permission and tool outcomes. These are editorial test proposals, not reported results about a named model. For management, state the news claim, its boundary, relevance to the deployed version and the next evidence-gathering action. Preserve announcement and analysis dates so future findings are not confused with the original access announcement.

Turn the announcement into an evidence register

For each assessment relevant to procurement, record the announcement or report date, tested version, access conditions, scope, findings and limitations. Distinguish an announced evaluation relationship from a published conclusion. When a sales statement invokes independent evaluation, request the specific supported proposition and its source. Do not let a broad approval label replace the details needed for a deployment decision.

Consider a controlled financial-assistant exercise. The tool creates drafts only; no real funds move. Define the expected behavior for an unauthorized role, an amount beyond an agreed limit, a missing source and an action requiring approval. Preserve permission decisions, proposal versions and tool outcomes. Run the cases after changes to either model or connector. This examines the completed workflow rather than assuming a model-level assessment also proves the integration correct. It is a suggested internal test, not a claim about published METR findings.

For an existing service, inventory the deployed version and relevant configuration before deciding whether new evidence applies. Record what the external report can inform and what remains an internal acceptance responsibility. A next action may be obtaining a report, running a focused test or maintaining a restricted scope. Keep the original October access-announcement date distinct from later reporting and from this analysis date. That discipline makes news useful to the decision without implying that evaluations have finished or that all enterprise uses have received a universal certification.
